DJ/producer/promoter, Patrick, my friend & fellow peer calls this the holy
trinity of the pacific northwest. true to us who want to succeed due to
large volume of talent in areas like seattle here. so aggressive marketing
is helpful, as well as a friendly, cooperative & supportive overall vibe.
guerrilla marketing, my cohorts and friends in the fourthcity have been
writing the book on local guerrilla marketing but as for some simple
shizzle, try the local print shop, make flyers and posters, get a street
team together, go out to everyone else's shows, bring in & invite more
artists people are wanting to see. use weeklies, zines & internet newsgroups
to your advantage.
check out some of these sites to help as examples of some promotional crews
in the nw:

ironically, it is more like tone deafness than color blindness. think of
beat matching as low frequency tuning. just practice with solid 4/4 beats
until you get it down and move on to more complex break patterns. keep the
tempos in the same region(+/- 10 to 16% bpm up to 100% if you use a cdj
though) or even multiples of tempo. and practice practice practice, focus on
separating the active record, the mix, the cue with you mixer, head or
headphones. you can't undo tone deafness you either are or not, so if you
can tell if things are out of tune you can probably learn to beat match.
hope this is somewhat helpful and get back a hold of me for any additional
data..
